Folks,

I apologise to you all if my own input to the "After the Loggers" thread, (now since thoughtfully removed by Lance to the archives) helped inflame that matter some.

In my post, I purposely avoided making reference to any particular side of politics. My point was that they are all the same, but that's just my opinion and I felt strongly enough to share it here.

I thought, that by not "taking a side", I would remain within the scope of the OLF guide lines, I was wrong and I shall try to steer clear of any future involvement at all in these volatile issues.

My biggest disappointment in all this however is that one among us has taken it upon themselves to contact Lance privately, and in a threatening manner, over an issue upon which, I believe, at that point in time, Lance had made no comment.

I find that approach tactless and offencive and something to which I take exception.

I feel that if one cannot bring one's self to make one's views public and open to the rest of the forum members, for what ever reason, prehaps one should consider keeping one's views to one's self. If one finds that one really NEEDS to have one's dummy spit, then one should at least show the intestinal fortitude to direct one's PM to those who have gotten one's back up.

But first, before doing so, maybe we all should try and remember that most of us, aside from Lance maybe, take more from the OLF than we give. If that was not the case, the OLF would simply not be as successful as it is.

In this environment, it is more likely than not that we are going to come across a topic or a post within a topic, that challenges our own position. If that happen to you, maybe you should try and think of the positives you have taken from the OLF in the past. And then using that thought, thicken your skin a little and temper your reaction before you end up replying in a manner that both you and the rest of us will regret.

And lastly, remember this folks, it is only the fact that we all think about things in different ways, that allows us to have the extremely diverse, creative, humorous and caring exchange of positive ideas within our craft that is the OLF.

In other words, eat the meat and spit out the bones, try to remember that you are one of many, no more, just one.

Launching a directly attack on Lance, just because he provides the bandwidth is lousy judgement and shows poor form.

Cheers all

Kim

All I know is it's hard to take Veggie Tales avatars seriously....

Sorry for the joke...

I agree. Taking pot shots at anyone is in bad taste, and to do it to Lance on his site, and then by PM is taking things way beyond the realm of civility.
Isn't the #1 rule here "be nice." ?
How hard is that anyway?

Thanks Kim for your post, and your valued contributions here on the OLF....

Well said guys! We've been having too much of negative posts lately and when i say too much, i don't mean 10 but 1 or 2 is already too many, i just find myself saddened that human nature goes the easy way of anger when all we usually see here has to do with music, beauty, sharing, generosity, care, love, talent, magic, you name all the positiveness that can come out of here. More than once have i had my eyes wet out of joy or laughter, life's too short to make it hell here, if i want negativeness, all i gotta do is watch the news at 6!

I say how about a group hug!

I asked a question in that thread as to whether people who felt strongly about environmental matter might not come together in places like this for a loose coallition of sorts - for the purpose of letter writing, signatures etc.
It was really a hypothetical question, and I hope it wasnt the start of what people are discussing here, I tuned out when it didnt seem like there was any interest in what I had mentioned.
What I find confounding is:
I find it difficult to believe that grown men cant argue thier point without resorting to bashing - passion for a matter is one thing, but it shouldnt reduce ones civility to a point to where one is antagonistic.
I think perhaps it arises from the fact that some can craft better arguements than others with thier words, leaving certain people with the feeling that obnoxious behaviour is thier only way to be heard?
Perhaps antagonism in the form of innuendo's and subtlety are often the verbal spear, inevitably sending the bull on the rampage.
But for some the mere mention of a particular topic will inflame them beyond reason.
This I cant understand.
Despite what your opinion might be on any subject, surely every man must know there are others in the world who defy thier opinion on the matter.
Its too bad because dialougue on matters is what eventually brings about solutions. Verbal venom not only alienates the person from making any sense on a matter, but it detracts from thier point as well.
Cheers

While I respect your comments, and I do,
The Luthiers Forum is not a platform for organizing political movements. Environmental or otherwise.

We are here to share in the joy of building guitars. LanceK38846.6036689815

I know, as I stated in the other topic, I will refrain from any further mention of these topics.
My apologies,
please know that I would never rip on anyone here no matter what the contributing factors, if I ever feel that way I'll just leave.
Cheers

I am all in favor of keeping this forum "on topic" (Lutherie).
I do not object to the occasional OT post with photos of members children,
or computer questons, etc as long as the subject of the post contains "OT"
to let us all know it's not about building.
I have seen several formerly good fourms go astray allowing political, social
or otherwise inflamitory topics to go unchecked. There are lots of forums
out there dedicated to such subject matter.
I completely trust Lance to use his discretion on these matters and to move
such topics into archive status or even delete them altogether.

I think your point is valid and worthy of consideration regarding any disagreement. Certainly challenge and contest the ideas, but not the author. That is very good advice regardless of the subject matter.

But with respect to religion, politics, and a few other "hot" issues... these really have no place on this forum. Our common bond is that we all love to build (and talk about) guitars. To discuss these other things only serves to divide us... and what good can come of that?   I think it is just best that we avoid these discussions all together.....
I asked the question what is the deal with certified wood. Who are the drivers etc. Honestly I had no personal information on this topic and my questions were and remain very sincere as offered. But please......no answers are now requested.....
Hesh, I don't think that you were wrong in asking this question. We're all seeking knowledge here, and the above topic does affect us. It only became a problem in the answers, which turned to opinion rather than information.

Here's a good way to check yourself before you click the "Post Reply" or "New Topic" button: If it assigns blame to anyone, don't send it!

I was very intrigued by the initial posting - those pictures were bound to inflame old tree-huggers (like me) but - they also gave me the idea that I could do some salvage work myself! And make the best of some bad situations I see here in the NorthWest.

Then, it shifted to talk of gas-guzzlers and went south.

I have One comment: A "moderated" forum is a GOOD thing. Especially when the moderator is even-handed and has no hidden agendas.

Let's appreciate what we have here.
